How to eliminate blue light in your office

Light is made up of different colors that combine together to form a white light. Each of these colors have varying wavelengths, with blue light having the shortest wavelength and the highest energy. The high energy of blue light is beneficial in keeping us awake during the day, helping increase productivity by boosting awareness and memory. However, overexposure to blue light can also create havoc in our health.

Blue light is present in natural light and artificial light, as well as the light emitted by screens. While blue light in daylight is stronger, it is the artificial light that is available during evening and night that creates complications. Due to the nature of work, most employees in an office environment are exposed to blue light for extended periods of time, which in turn affects their health. Along with disrupting the circadian rhythm and throwing the sleep cycle off course, blue light has also been linked to an increase in obesity, diabetes and cancer. They can also add to depression and heart problems by reducing the quality of sleep. Reducing blue light is therefore important to creating a healthy work environment for employees. To do this:

1. Maximise natural light in the office:

As most of the day of a person is spent indoors, it is important to increase the natural light available in offices. This will help keep employees alert and while also regulating the circadian rhythm. Make use of natural light while creating a lighting design plan. Providing outdoor spaces for employees to take breaks in are also useful for increasing their exposure to daylight.

2. Use healthy lights:

Changing the lighting used in offices or adding in lights with reduced blue light can allow employees to work in the evening without negatively impacting their health. One of the best options for this is Healthy lights by Soraa, which provide white light that does not contain blue light. The Zero Blue technology used in these LED lights eliminates blue light completely, providing healthy light sources for employees. Along with these, lights that make use of Soraa snap system can be used as they can change color temperatures and help in reducing migraines and headaches caused by lights. Warm Dim lamps can also be used towards this as these lamps can produce warm lights and can be dimmed to reduce their harmful effects.

3. Use a filter:

As employees are also exposed to blue light from screens regularly, using blue light filters while working can be helpful. There are blue light filters inbuilt in phones and systems today, as well as programs like f.lux that can modify the screen lights. There are also screen protectors available that can be used on desktops and phones to reduce blue light. These filters and protectors also help reduce eye strain caused by bright lights on the screen.
