Lighting Lingo

IMPORTANT LIGHTING LINGO

Lighting jargon can get confusing, here is the simple version.

1

LUMINOUS EFFICACY

Luminous efficacy is a property of light sources, which indicates what portion of the emitted electromagnetic radiation is usable for human vision. It is the ratio of emitted luminous flux to radiant flux. Luminous efficacy is related to the overall efficiency of a light illumination.

___

2

LUMEN

measure of the total “amount” of visible light in some defined beam or angle, or emitted from some source.

___

3

INPUT POWER

The power presented to the input terminals of a component, circuit, device, piece of equipment, or system is also called input power. The power absorbed, utilized, or otherwise dissipated by a component, circuit, device, piece of equipment, sys- tem, material, or medium.
___

4

COLOR RENDER INDEX

A quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to reveal the colors of various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source. Light sources with a high CRI are desirable in color-critical applications such as neonatal care, photography and cinematography.
___

5

COLOR TEMPERATURE

(Degrees Kelvin) is a characteristic of visible light that has important applications in lighting, photography, manufacturing and other fields. The color temperature of a light source that radiates light out of the source creates various hues which may create unusual appearances or various moods.
___

6

OPERATING TEMPERATURE

The operating temperature is the range of ambient temperature within which a power supply, or any other electrical equipment, operates in. This ranges from a minimum operating temperature, to a peak or maximum operating temperature, outside which, the power supply may fail.
